TQ Refrigeration was approached by a long-standing customer who was experiencing high energy costs at his store.

After attending site meetings and consultations, it was established that the biggest contributing factor to the high energy costs was the old technology refrigeration plant that was now at the end of its life. Our remit was to provide a proposal where the upgrade work could be carried out in phases while allowing the store to continue trading.

The phased programme of work included the decommissioning and removal of two back-of-house cold rooms, along with the sales floor multi-deck display cabinets and associated services and refrigeration plant. In phase one, the proposal was to replace the existing back-up cold rooms with new rooms installed with modern, efficient refrigeration systems that would provide dependable back-up for chilled and frozen storage during the sales floor refrigeration upgrade.

The sales floor was then divided into two sections, creating a safe working area while allowing the store to continue trading in the other. Our proposal was to replace the existing open-fronted multi-deck display cabinets with Bonds energy-efficient cabinets fitted with doors. The proposal also included the design, installation, and commissioning of two multi-compressor condensing units fitted with Bitzer compressors. The lead compressor on each condensing unit was controlled by a Danfoss inverter drive.

The works were completed on time with minimal disruption to the store. The results achieved were beyond expectations, with the store benefiting from a 60% reduction in energy costs.
